Canada's Damian Warner won the decathlon Tuesday at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Warner had a sizable lead heading into the closing 1,500-metre race, and his fifth-place finish was good enough to secure the title in the 10-discipline event.
The 24-year-old from London, Ont., finished with 8,282 points. England's Ashley Bryant took the silver with 8,109 points, and Grenada's Kurt Felix?got the bronze with ?8,070.
Warner was the bronze medallist at last year's world championships. He hadn't competed yet this season due to a leg injury.
A pair of Canadians were on track for medals in the?heptathlon.
Brianne Theisen-Easton topped the opening day with 3,939 points, followed by Jessica Zelinka in second place with 3,744.
Theisen-Eaton topped the shot put and the 200 metres, with Zelinka second in both. Zelinka?had the best 100m hurdles time, with Theisen-Eaton in second.
The event ends Wednesday with the final four?events.
Warner's gold medal was one of?seven by Canadians on Day 6 in Glasgow.
Hammer thrower Jim Steacy of Lethbridge, Alta., won the men's event to complete?a Canadian sweep a day after Sultana Frizell won the women's.
Earlier, swimmer Ryan Cochrane (men's 1,500 metres), women's mountain biker Catharine Pendrel, weightlifter Marie-ève Beauchemin-Nadeau (women's 75 kg), and wrestlers Erica Wiebe (women's 75 kg) and Korey Jarvis (men's 125 kg) won their events.
Kate Van Buskirk of Brampton, Ont., also made the podium, winning?bronze in the women's 1,500 metres.
